My professor is trying to scare us into changing our major from teaching to something else...?

I have always wanted to become a teacher, but my professor scares our class so much by saying how we won;t have any life cause we will be too busy correcting papers and creating lesson plans. She says that we have to create like 5 lesson plans everyday for our classroom, including visual aids and books too. I am an elementary education major - is it really as %26quot;bad%26quot; as she says it is?

look what ever u do should interest u a lot it should to exciting to u there is no profession in this world where u ideally will get ur earnings without actually working hard at least during initial periods

teaching is in fact a very noble profession it serves its purpose materialistically along with work values u would help so many people , do make them better persons in future, nurturing right ideas, right way of thinking, right approach in difficult circumstances and they will always remember through out their lives for all that u have done for them

once u start doing all those preparation of lesson plans, correcting papers etc , u would get used to them , planning ur work accordingly and prioritizing and managing ur inhand work would definately save u so much time helping people will give u so much satisfaction believe me i was into teaching myself and enjoyed being into it

now it all depends on how much inclined u r in the profession

no, my fiance teaches high school theater arts and loves it, lesson plans once a week and visual aids? no not a bad decision to give back either
no job is easy. You just have to like it and be prepare to deal with it. my french professor makes me wanna be a teacher..thought I am already decided in something else but what I am saying is that she seems to enjoy her job...
No, after a while a lesson plan takes about as long as it takes you to type it up. I think there is something very wrong with a professor who tries to discourage her class from majoring in her subject. Maybe she just wants to have less classes as she's probably tenured.

Tenured = can't fire. Fewer students, lower workload, same pay!
If you like kids and you love to teach all that stuff is beside the point. No matter what you end up doing for a living there will be some aspects of it you won't like. If you like most of it you are doing good. If you have a passion for something and you end up making your living with your passion, you are doing the best you can do. He probably only wants people who really, really want to teach to go into it, and doesn't want to pollute the teaching pool with people looking for an easy, quick way to make a decent living with minimum personal investment. Teaching is hard work with lots of frustration and limitations thrown in. If you love it, do it and you will love it more. It may also break your heart when you get attached to the kids and something rotten happens. Those kids need and deserve really, really good, caring dedicated teachers. If you're one of those, put in the earplugs and keep going. Good luck.
No. I'm not sure why she's saying that. Teaching is a low paying but useful position, but as you stay in teaching you can make more money. Some teachers get paid around 50k-60k.
I suspect it is not that she is trying to scare you - but that she wants you to really understand that there is a lot of work. When I was training, we were told something similar, and we had several students who thought that it was a 9-3, five days a week, long vacations kind of job. You need to understand how much work you will be doing. My first 2-3 years, I did 12 hour days plus 8 hour days through the weekend. It is more manageable now, but it is not ever going to be a 40 hour a week job. If you realise this, and still want to do it... stick with it.
The first few years, the job is very difficult %26amp; time consuming. My wife would easily spend 6 hours a day outside of class time getting everything ready. After that, you have many of the lesson plans etc. done and just need to update them. It is hectic. That's why 50% of teachers quit within 5 years. If you've been reading the news, this may be a record year for teacher layoffs. Estimates run as high as 100,000 teachers. In Cleveland, the average class size will be 40 students, that's after cutting all art, music, %26amp; PE also. The days are going to be long!
