Thinking of changing my major to Sociology. Any social workers out there?

I'm a Bio Major but have taken some classes in sociology and have become very intrested. I was looking into becoming a social worker. Any comments or advice would be nice. Thanks! =]

I highly recommend that you make sure that you emphasize a major that will give you A GOOD JOB. Sociology is a major that doesn't give you a particular skill. It's my favorite subject, but I couldn't make a living from it.

Social Work is helping people through Government funded programs or Non-Profit Organizations. Unless you are in a big city, there aren't as many jobs now as there were in the 60's, 70's and up into the present.

FYI:

I have a BA in Social Science/minor in English and Sociology and a teaching credential. I'm retired now.

Check out sites that give you info about jobs and what will be in demand. You can always volunteer time doing what you like.

Sociology and social work are two entirely different things. If you want to become a social worker, you need to major in social work.
I just wanted to reinforce what Lisa said. You will not be able to get a job as a social worker with a sociology degree. A social worker has a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work (BSW). Social Work is an amazing field to work in, but honestly, right now is a terrible time to try and find a job. Most states are currently experiencing hiring freezes and private agencies are losing their government funding due to our current recession. I would never discourage someone from getting into social work, but be prepared to have some difficulty finding employment. Good luck to you.
