Thinking of changing major; what job would suit me?

I know most of you will say that I should go see a career counselor, but I've had since high school and that hasn't helped me at all; hence the reason why I'm so confused right now.

I'm presently majoring in psychology with a minor in linguistics and it's near the end of my first semester in university. For some reason, I'm having real trouble academically and am ashamed of my grades. They lie around 72% in most classes. I really don't feel confident at all (I do ask questions to the prof%26amp;such). And, though psychology is interesting, I can't seem to grasp the concepts as easily as other people.

My initial plan was to go to graduate school in hopes of becoming a speech-language pathologist and if things didn't work out, I would become a clinical psychologist. However, I'm really doubting my choices right now, especially since graduate school scares me. I'm not INTO my program as much as I should be. I see students asking a large array of questions that are not relevant to the class itself, but rather to further their own knowledge. Thus, I maybe chose the wrong program to major in?

I love anything related to design (fashion, interior design, graphic design); I love correcting essays; I love algebra; I love the entertainment world (listening to new music, watching the latest shows,..) and am always updated on the latest everything; I love helping people either academically or just any other simple tasks; I think a lot about life in general; I always imagine my life as scenes of a movie and always think of what could happen through moving images in my mind; Kiddy things make me happy (Cartoons, Disney, ..); I get irritated when people automatically see the bad in people and, thus, I like to learn about someone before concluding anything; I hate economics, physics, biology, chemistry and terms such as %26quot;neglect symptomatology%26quot; that refer to the brain.

Yes, this is pretty much a rant %26amp; I'm not sure if my likes%26amp;dislikes are even relevant to the subject, but hopefully somebody can help me clear things up.

And feel free to talk about your own life/university experiences =)

I completely understand what you are going through. After 5 years in college and 6 majors, I finally know what I want to do. And this is ok. Many people go through it.

Thankfully, I had great mentors in my life that helped me out. I recommend that you declare yourself as %26quot;UNDECIDED%26quot;. Take your general education courses (e.g., Biology, Math, Social Sciences, etc.). You should finish during your second year. This courses will help you refine your interest. For example, it wasn't until my 3rd year in college that allowed me to enjoy psychology. Even then, it's not my passion per se. After taking many courses in psychology, I discovered what I really wanted to do: Occupational Therapy. I will be pursuing a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy next year.

However, don't jump into something too soon! When I discovered OT, I searched online for more info. I watched youtube videos on what OT's really do and which areas are available. My next step was... doing volunteer work. I decided to volunteer in a pediatric clinic (because I love kids!). This absolutely changed my life! I couldn't believe it took my 5 years to figure out what I wanted to do :)

I recommend that you complete your General Ed. courses. It's never to early to volunteer. If you want to work in healthcare, volunteer in a hospital. If you are interested in teaching, volunteer at a school. If you want the entertaining world, volunteer at a radio station, etc. This places will allow you to see many professions at work.

A good idea is to ask around. Ask people what they do, how they got there, pros and cons of the job, and good skills necessary.

You mentioned you like design. Volunteer at a high-end boutique. If you like correcting essay, ask a teacher if they need a volunteer as an aid. If you like to think about life, talk to a philosopher.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, your choices for alternative careers %26quot;fashion, interior design, graphic design, helping people%26quot;, are as impractical and romantic as your first choice -- Psychology. There's not much anyone can recommend until you decide to get more realistic about your life.
I think you would love a BA in Popular Culture/Media Studies. Look that up.
u should be a carny
%26quot;I'm not sure if my likes%26amp;dislikes are even relevant to the subject%26quot;

They most certainly are related to subjects. The problem is that they relate to too many subjects! lol

I think Graphic Design may be the best choice, based on what you said. You seem like a creative type, so you need something that will let you spread your wings.
I would stick to it another semester and see how it goes...it took me almost a year to truly acclimate to college courses...and I was an A student in high school...#11 grad. When in college, year 3, 4 and 5 I was an A student too...

give it a shot
i am currently undecided, getting my general liberal arts requirements in. it also gives me time to experiment with different types of courses. im taking an intro to communications course and i really love it!

its about the media! ...advertising...the public and the relationship between the media and the public. i really enjoy this course. so maybe you would enjoy communications as your major with a possible music minor or something.

if i were you i would take an intro to communications course...at my college it even fills a requirement

just try new courses and figure out what you like

hope this helps

good luck!
