1956 Melbourne Olympic - the first Games to be boycotted. Netherland, Spain and Switzerland boycotted due to Soviet's crushing of Hungarian Revolution. And Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon boycotted due to Suez War. People's Republic of China also boycotted because Republic of China (Taiwan) was allowed to compete.
1964 Tokyo Olympics - IOC banned South Africa from competing due to apartheid
1968 Mexico Olympics - American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos did a Black Power salute. and Czech gymnast V臎ra 膶谩slavsk谩 silently bowed her head and away during her awarding ceremonies in protest of Soviet's invasion of her country.
1972 Munich Olympics - the Munich Massacre occured.
1976 Montreal Olympics - 28 African nations boycotted the Games due to IOC's refusal to bar New Zealand from the games. New Zealand's all-Black rugby team toured South Africa who are under apartheid regime. Republic of China (Taiwan) boycotted the Games as well when Canada recognized People's Reublic of China, who also boycotted the Games.
1980 Moscow Olympics - 61 countries led by the US boycotted the games due to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Chinese-Taipeh (formerly Taiwan) boycotted due to Nagoya Resolution which made PROC to participate in the IOC. Iran also boycotted for unknown reason.
1984 Los Angeles Olympics - 14 nations led by the Soviet Union boycotted the Games in apparent retaliation to US-led boycott in 1980. Iran and Libya didn't participate due to unknown reasons
1988 Seoul Olympics - North Korea, who is war with the South, boycotted along with 6 other nations.

For starters where allot fewer sports (disciplines/events) in 1948 then there's know. You had 17 sports in London Olympics where as in Beijing 2008 28 sports.
London 2012 number will be back to 26 then go back up to 28 for 2016.What happened was Baseball and Softball (1992-1996) where voted to be removed from the Olympics.
From 1948-1960 Olympics still had 17 sports as part of the Olympic proggrame.
Tokyo 1964- Volleyball and Judo where added.
Munich 1972-Indoor Handball and after a 52 year absence Archery. Slalom racing-Canoe/Kayak- would be part of 1972 games and ever since 1992 would be apart of every Olympics.
LA 1984- Synchronized swimming and Rhythmic Gymnastics make their first appearance.
Seoul 1988-Table Tennis makes its first appearance to the Olympic programme. After 64 years of not being part of the Olympics Tennis returns
Barcelona 1992- Baseball and Badminton
Atlanta 1996- Beach Volleyball , Mountain Biking and Softball.
Sydney 2000- Triathlon and Taekwondo. Also Trampoline was added.
Beijing 2008- BMX and Marathon Swimming
Women ever since 1948 the number of sports and events would increase with Boxing being the only sport out of the 26 that women don't compete in.
1952- A change in the rules for Equestrian competitions meant women could enter but would also compete alongside the men in the same 'mixed events'
1964- Women for the 1st time ever competed in a team sport Volleyball.
1976- Women's events in Basketball, Rowing and Handball
1980- Women competed in Field Hockey .
1984- Women's marathon and Road Racing Cycling made itheir debuts.
1992-Women competed in Judo for the first time
1996- Women's Football (Soccer) made its debut
2000- Women competed in Weightlifting for the first time as well as Water Polo
2004- Women's Wrestling debuts.
Beijing 2008 a record 42% of the athletes where women. Rome 1960 just 11.5% of athletes where women to 22% 1980 Moscow.
By 2000 Sydney 38%, with 4,306 female athletes out of a total 10,568 athletes.
2004 Athens women competed in 26 out of the 28 sports (Baseball and Boxing men only) and 135 events. While Beijing 2008 number of sports women competed in remained the same the events where increased to 137. Women where able to compete in the steeple chase and women's foil (fencing) where added.

The Olympic games were in hiatus in 1940 and 1944 so as 1916 during World War I.
The 1940 Olympic games were to been held in Tokyo; the 1944 Olympic games were to been held in London. But it was cancelled due to WWII. Then after the war, the IOC awarded the Olympics to London.
