Psh, after taking English class after English class I have decided that I HATE it and desperately need a change.
One thing I've discovered I'm good at is math, which was surprising to me, and my math professor recommended I take Chemistry. Turns out she was right and I'm really interested in it (even though it's only an intro course).
I've always been somewhat interested in having a career in the medical field. Nursing is out of the question--when my father was dying a few years ago I saw what a lot of the nurses who cared for him had to go through....and while I have a lot of respect for them and what they did for him, I could never do it myself. I couldn't stand going through all of the schooling necessary to become a Pharmacist, and I'm drawing a blank on different careers I could look into. I have, however, decided to attend an orientation at school for their Medical Laboratory Technician program to learn more and see if it's a fitting choice for me.
Does anybody have any other ideas for Majors and Careers for me to look into?
Thinking about changing major?
I've no suggestions for majors as I'm from Oz but I would think any science major would be good grounding. My approach would be to investigate careers, see what you like, and then look at the schooling required (whether a science major is a prereq or not, and whether science majors are looked upon favourably) and then go from there. I should point out that when I mention whether science majors are looked upon favourably, more often than not (in Oz anyway) they AREN'T. They like to see you've got a diverse range of interests, and it often makes you stand out at interview. But don't not choose a science major just for that. If you don't get the grades required you can't win an interview.
Anyway I'm rambling. Some possible careers:
a) Doctor. Most obvious. King of the pile. Prestige, money (though I don't really think it's worth it for the stress they undergo), and the ability to prescribe (I'm sure you'll understand how annoying it is for me, as a pharmacist, to chase up Drs for mistakes we detect just because we can't alter it ourselves)
b) Physiotherapist. Apparently you get to give each other free massages at physio school :p
c) Dentist. Hmmm dunno how it is over in the States but here dentistry = $$$$$$$
d) Dietitian. Surprisingly a lot of them are quite large-sized themselves
e) Occupational therapist. You help structure their home/work etc environments for better quality of life, esp if they have mobility, visual, hearing issues.
f) Speech therapist/pathologist. Haven't met too many of them, but they do exist
g) Social work. It's not really health, but hospitals always need social workers. They help facilitate normal social functioning of its patients, e.g. if they're from a low socioeconomic background and have trouble getting money to pay for their meds.
h) Radiographer/radiologist. They scan patients. As in, CT/MRI scans. Dunno much about them, unfortunately.
This is most definitely not a comprehensive list but hope it's helpful.
